DIY Home Security

June 8, 2015 By //  by Joe Taylor

With the promise of better weather and many weekends spent outside, home projects may be filling up to do lists. And one of those projects may be improving your home’s security without breaking the bank. You don’t have to hire a company to install a complicated system in order to feel safe around your home this summer. For you “do it yourselfers” there are a number of different ways to make your home safe, and save money.

Pay Attention to Landscaping

Chances are, you’re probably already on spending a lot of time out in the yard or garden, sprucing up your yard and making it suitable for summer barbecues and parties. So, why not make just a few tweaks that will not only look good, but contribute to the safety of your home.

  • A kept up yard shows burglars someone is home and caring for the house
  • Don’t block potential entrances with greens, it gives burglars a place to hide
  • Keep it tidy, don’t provide burglars with the tools they need to break in

Simple Installation

Besides a security system, there are a number of things you can install in your home that are easy to do yourself and don’t cost a lot.

  • Deadbolts
  • Chain locks
  • Automatic lights
  • Garage openers with codes
  • Nightlock Door Barricades
  • Motion Detectors

Sneaky Security

You don’t have to be James Bond to have covert security around your house. Simply making small changes to landscaping, paint jobs and other areas around your home can help hide any security measures you’ve put in place.

  • Cameras hidden by trees or shrubs
  • Paint sensors the same color as your trim
  • Some security features, like the Nightlock Door Barricade, go inside of your home
  • Mobile Apps that allow you to monitor from out of your home

Though, keep in mind that while you may want to keep some of your security features hidden, showing burglars that your home is protected is not a bad idea.

These are some simple things you can do, without an expert and without spending a ton of money, to protect your home and get outside at the same time.
